Mixed Media Sculpting and Doll Making

In 2025, Arlo began work on an expansive mixed-media sculptural project that creatively explores themes of gender and identity through a whimsical, medieval revival aesthetic. Drawing from his experiences as a transgender man raised in a politically and religiously conservative family, he employs crafting mediums such as clay and wool to create doll-like sculptures that incorporate Christian religious imagery.

As a child, Arlo’s playful interest focused on creating handmade clothes, props, and dollhouses for the imaginative worlds he envisioned. Now, as he applies those same skills to crafting his own dolls, he draws inspiration from the creativity and whimsy of his childhood imagination. While these sculptures are not intended for play like typical children's toys, they maintain a creative connection to the dolls he engaged with during his youth.

Art and Sustainability

For Arlo, his process must reflect his identity as much as the outcomes. Learn more about the materials he uses and his sustainable practices.

The Symbolism of Sheep

Arlo incorporates wool and sheep-like features in many of his works to invoke both religious and political symbolism, which he dissects and responds to in his art. Being a "sheep," as defined in either context, means being submissive, docile, and compliant. However, these traits are recontextualized to illustrate resilience, introspection, and boldness.
